In 1974, NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) released this clip of the Air Defense Command (ADC) detecting Santa Claus on their radar scopes, they launch an intercept and provide clearances upon verification of his identity.
According to the National Archives, the tradition of NORAD releasing the location of Santa Claus began in 1955 with Colonel Harry Shoup. He received a phone call from a child who was trying to reach Santa Claus by using the Santa Line phone number in a Sears advertisement. The child reversed two of the numbers and, instead, reached Shoup. He ran with the idea and started releasing updates on Santa’s whereabouts to the press.
Last year there were 1,250 volunteers who staffed the NORAD Santa Tracker phone lines. The volunteers were military personnel and Department of Defense civilians from both the Canadian and American military.
