On March 4, 1925, Calvin Coolidge was inaugurated as the 30th President of the United States with his wife First Lady Grace Coolidge by his side. Sworn in by Chief Justice William H. Taft on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol, Coolidge had become President after the death of President Harding two years prior. This was his only elected term.
This old silent newsreel depicts the grand event the inauguration was. In the beginning of the video, the President and First Lady are seen leaving by automobile with Senator Charles Curtis. After the drive to the swearing in, the film captures the various bands that playing in the parade as well as official duties and speeches at different places – including Arlington National Cemetery.
Coolidge’s inauguration was the first broadcast on the radio.
