Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama in January 1965

Martin Luther King Jr.’s born name was Michael King Jr. His father changed both his own name and his son’s name in 1934. The change was brought about after a family vacation to Germany when King Sr. learned about the Protestant Martin Luther.
